Zoox cofounder and Chief Technology Officer Jesse Levinson told Business Insider the companies had talked from time to time over the past few years but started seriously discussing an acquisition this year.
The startup gave Amazon rides in its autonomous test vehicles in downtown San Francisco to prove it had strong technology.
And Amazon assured Zoox it wouldn t derail the company s ambitions to launch a robotaxi service.
The autonomous-vehicle company Zoox had been talking to Amazon intermittently for a few years when the COVID-19 pandemic threw some curveballs at the startup, Zoox Chief Technology Officer and cofounder Jesse Levinson told Business Insider. In April, Zoox laid off 10% of its workforce.
