they are making announcements to tell people this is a mandatory evacuation zone, advising people to take shelter elsewhere. so lieutenant morris, if you can describe to us a little bit about what you guys are doing, where we re at right now and why you are doing this now. well, like you said, we re letting everybody know this is a mandatory evacuation zone. not everyone s aware of that. many people shuttered up their houses and they think they re safe. last night, zone a was declared a mandatory evacuation zone. so, not everyone knows that. all south of pine island road is a mai a mandatory evacuation zone. so what you re telling me, even though we could see a storm surge that is 5 to 10 feet and we re probably at about 5 feet are they talking to someone right now? let s take a quick look. thomas, what s happening right now is we can show you that residence right here. are you evacuating, sir? are you going to evacuate? he s not going to evacuate.
recovery 25 years later from hurricane andrew, which was a devastating storm. this is three times as big. and we do have our houses that have been built to a higher standard based on what happened with that storm. we ve learned a lot about what we need to do to be prepared, and we activated. so now we re activating even more with the huge storm surge that s predicted. we have called for evacuation of 600,000 people. you know, miami s a real city. it s not just a place to go in the wintertime. you know that better than anybody. but i ve got friends who are lawyers down there and people working those big buildings just like any other major city. are those big buildings safe in a storm like this where it s going up to 175 miles an hour, or well over 100 miles an hour perhaps? are they safe in those buildings? you know, many of the downtown buildings are being evacuated. they re in the zone a or zone b, which are mandatory evacuation areas. also, we have a problem.

direct hit. evacuations have been ordered in some places. the cnn s rosa flores is in nooim beach. what are you seeing? reporter: good morning, john. some people waking up this morning in the miami area to learn that they ve been added to the evacuation list. in miami dade, people with disabilities started evacuating yesterday. today, at 7:00 a.m., the area where i m standing in right now is under a mandatory evacuation, so is zone a, which is part of the coastal areas, including this island that s here to the south. that includes everyone in h a mobile home. that s what public officials are saying, that they need to get out. they need to get out early before the impending doom of this giant storm hits florida. now, when it comes to our friends in the south, in munroe county, according to the governor, 25,000 people have already evacuated, and more are
