The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has stated that non-compliance with safety guidelines by retail outlets is a major cause of gas explosions and fire accidents in the country.
This was even as it insisted that gas dealers in the black market were particularly culpable and should be held accountable for the incidents.
In a statement issued at the end of the zonal annual general meeting of oil and gas stakeholders tagged: Oil And Gas Safe Operations And Compliance: DPR As A Business Enabler in Warri, Delta State, Zonal Controller of DPR, Antai Asuquo, was quoted as saying that dealers’ lack of compliance with safety rules and guidelines had resulted in the loss of lives in the sector.

The Department of Petroleum Resources has launched an investigation into the explosion that occurred at a gas refilling station in Rumuodomaya, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State on Saturday in which one person was feared dead and several others injured.
The DPR said its officials were at the scene of the incident and had commenced investigation to unravel the cause of the explosion.
The Zonal Controller of the DPR, Port Harcourt Zonal office, Bassey Nkanga, confirmed the incident, and said, “We are there at the site. We are investigating the incident.”

The Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, has introduced a computer application to monitor how petroleum products in all the filling stations within the country operate.
This was just as the body also closed down a filling station for selling adulterated petroleum products and seven gas stations for illegal operations.
The Zonal Controller, DPR, Port Harcourt Zonal Office, Bassey Nkanga, who unveiled the application, Downstream Remote Monitoring System, DRMS, weekend a two-day stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt with petrol and gas station owners including other operators in the downstream sector, said the platform would be deployed to check hoarding and diversion of products by marketers.
