Scorching US heatwave killing fish in warming rivers
Baby salmon are dying by the thousands in one California river, and an entire run of endangered salmon could be wiped out in another.
Fishermen who make their living off adult salmon, once they enter the Pacific Ocean, are sounding the alarm as blistering heat waves and extended drought in the US West raise water temperatures and imperil fish from Idaho to California.
Hundreds of thousands of young salmon are dying in Northern Californiaâs Klamath River as low water levels brought about by drought allow a parasite to thrive, devastating a Native American tribe whose diet and traditions are tied to the fish.
Millions of mice are going to be gasping for air, choking, bleeding internally, Ms Naxakis said. Sometimes it takes days (for mice) to die a slow and painful death.
Swarms of mice across western NSW and parts of Queensland have caused devastating damage to farms and homes, costing close to $100 million. The infestation is also taking a mental and emotional toll on farmers and residents fighting the plague.
PETA s stance has irritated farmers whose crops, grain and hay stores have been eaten and destroyed by mice.
Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack called PETA members idiots who have never been outside the city .
Giant sequoia still smouldering from 2020 California wildfire
A giant sequoia has been found smouldering and smoking in a part of Sequoia National Park that burned in one of California s huge wildfires last year.
The smouldering tree was found recently by scientists and fire crews surveying the effects of the blaze, which was ignited by lightning last August and spread over more than 699 square kilometres of the Sierra Nevada.
It took five months to fully contain.
