Tributes pour in for Nehawu’s Khaya Xaba By Okuhle Hlati Share THE death of Khaya Xaba has been described as a huge blow not only for the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu), but for the workers’ struggle. Messages of condolences started flooding in on Sunday following the death of the Nehawu national spokesperson in the early hours of the morning after a short battle with Covid-19 related illness. Xaba made it public earlier this month that he contracted the virus and had been in hospital since. Nehawu s Secretary-General Zola Saphetha conveyed condolences to his family, friends and colleagues stating it was a dark hour for them.

Nehawu, DA call for speedy investigation into Charlotte Maxeke fire

Nehawu, DA call for speedy investigation into Charlotte Maxeke fire Updated Martine van der Walt Ehlers Share this: There have been widespread calls for an immediate investigation into the devestating fire at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg.  The blaze has lead to the temporary closure of the facility. The fire started on Friday in a storeroom at the hospital with melting plastic and medical supplies, causing flames to re-ignite a day later. On Saturday, Gauteng Premier David Makhura visited the hospital and announced that the facility will be closed for seven days. The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) says the fact that the fire raged on for many hours proves that occupational safety measures are not adequately adhered to at the hospital.

US regulators decision to suspend use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has thrown Africa s COVID-19 inoculation drive into chaos. Now questions are increasingly being raised as to why supply deals have not been struck for Russian and Chinese vaccines such as Sputnik V and Sinovac.
