As a Science Writer i should first start out by pointing out that viruses are microbes as well but it made sense to call this microbes, viruses and destiny because of our two writers. This is ed young and he is a Science Writer for the atlantic, author of a new book, i contain multitudes about the micro biomes. Thus the microbes of our panel title. They, in the early days, didnt have the testing capacity. When it came online in meaningful amounts, it increased significantly. I think the big frustration in the u. S. Has been that there is this inability to go out and do widespread Disease Testing and surveillance. David explain that to me. We heard alex azar saying everyone who needs to be tested can be tested. Where are we on that . Weording to secretary azar, are in good shape. Drew that is misleading. All of the testing that is being done is essentially boutique testing, where someone gets a nasal and throat swab, and someone has to basically go and handle this sample. It is a human process. It is not the take a swab, it goes into a machine, and you are running 2000 of these a day, or a rapid strep test that you would get. That is where the real testing volume and surveillance happens right now. Even if there are test kits available, you still need the people available to run them, and that is a major bottleneck. David very hel
Thank you for coming this is a Panel Discussion in which we will reveal our microbes are our puppet masters i should first start off by pointing out that viruses our microbes as wellir but we have ed yong a writer for the atlantic author of a new book teethree about micro biomes, i contain multitudesel and we have Science Writer from the New York Times and author of many books including up one a planet of viruses iam sophia shah author of pandemic and all of these books will be for sale by barnes noble and we will be signing them after that signing table letter h. So you can join us there. Is anyone here actually a microbiologist . So now we cant make anything up. [laughter] so it is an interesting time to talk about microbiology because it has been a paradigm shift in recentus years. Think back to the late 19th century we thought abouten microbes as the malevolent intruders to target with precision one surgical precision i call that microbial zeno phobia. And it makes sense back then
Fact there has never been a time when humans were not affected during his time as a selfdescribed disease detective he has had his own brushes with viruses and wnfectious disease in contagion in 1995 he worked in zaire for the first a bola after 9 11 he was called to washington to prevent the spread of anthrax and in 2003 called to hong kong to help quarantines ours. These are some of the stories he chronicles in the next pandemic as a disease hunter and has been trying to prepare the public for Health Emergencies and he has seen it all. Telling us microbes will always be a problem he also writes that in all all epidemics and pandemics are inevitable in fact most can be mitigated if not prevented. But how do we have enough resources . To help a separate the hype from the facts what poses the greatest risk of what we need to do please join me on a Public Health journey by welcoming doctor kohn to the Carnegie Council this morning. [applause] thank you very much. Good morning everybody.
