In October, the ACO - the Amateur Chess Organisation - held its sixth tournament at the 5-star Hotel Fodele Beach in Crete. More than 160 participants from 24 nations enjoyed pleasant temperatures, ideal tournament conditions and a great social programme.
In the fourth episode of “Olympiad Stories with Saravanan”, we focus on the 14th world champion, Vladimir Kramnik. Kramnik arrived at the world scene in 1992 at the Manila Olympiad, with a score of 8½/9. His performance rating was over 2900! This was the stage where he broke through, before eventually defeating Garry Kasparov in the World Championship. A pre-requisite for an organization to become world class is to have competent people working for it in key managerial positions. This is exactly what FIDE has done by roping in Dana Reizniece-Ozola as the managing director. A look at her credentials and you can have no doubts about her competency. Dana is a former Minister of Economics of Latvia as well as its Finance Minister! She has a Masters in Business Administration, has been the head of space programs and her list of achievements is quite huge. To add to all of this, she is also a strong chess player - a WGM with an Elo of 2283. At the World Championship 2021 in Dubai, IM Sagar Shah met with Dana and had a detailed interview about her journey of life, becoming FIDE's managing director, her vision for FIDE and much more.
From 1-10 October the World Senior Championships 2021, organised by the Amateur Chess Organization (ACO), were played on the Greek island of Crete. 178 players fought in seven rating groups for the titles. Several Grandmasters, including Vlastimil Hort and Daniel King, supported the amateurs.
