研究团队介绍，作为一种典型的遗迹化石，恐龙足迹蕴含了丰富的信息，是恐龙当时的动态行为缩影。恐龙足迹学的一项重要功能就是可以有效判别当时当地动物群的组成，而且这些信息可以在很大程度上弥补骨骼化石的局限性。同时根据恐龙足迹，可以判断恐龙当时的运动状态，如行走、奔跑甚至游泳等。
2017年4月，有富顺县村民在网上发布了几张老家池塘旁边的垫脚石的照片并询问照片上的“鸡爪”是不是恐龙足迹，自贡恐龙博物馆在得知这一消息后立即与其取得联系。2017年5月初，自贡恐龙博物馆赶赴实地进行查看，确认是恐龙足迹无疑。5月中旬，自贡恐龙博物馆在与对方商议后将这些恐龙足迹化石征集回自贡恐龙博物馆收藏保护，开展研究。
经过对周边岩层露头的踏勘，学者认为该足迹化石
