Global pharma shares sink

Global pharma shares sink Reuters May 07, 2021 WASHINGTON: Shares of Covid-19 vaccine makers plunged after the US President Joe Biden backed a proposed waiver for intellectual property rights even as the pharmaceutical industry, analysts and experts doubted its impact, saying the real problem is a lack of raw material and knowhow. Pfizer, Moderna, Novavax and US shares of BioNTech were down between 4% and 10% on Thursday. The slide in stocks was understandable, but likely an over-reaction, Zhiqiang Shu, senior biotechnology analyst at Berenberg in New York, said. “The production of mRNA vaccines is not just about intellectual property. A lot of other things are in play, such as manufacturing knowhow and capacity. Other companies or countries are unlikely to produce mRNA shots quickly,” he said.

EU signals readiness to join the US in Covid vaccine patent waiver

SHARE European leaders said they were ready to join talks with the US on lifting intellectual property rights on Covid vaccines after Joe Biden said the move could help bring the pandemic under control. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Brussels was committed to bold gestures to end the crisis after Mr Biden s announcement that he would support waiving intellectual property rights for COVID-19 vaccination. The World Health Organisation said in April that of 700 million vaccines administered around the world, only 0.2% had been in low-income countries. A recent surge of infections in India, the world s second most populous country, has underlined the point.

COVID-19 vaccine maker shares sink as governments mull patent waiver

COVID-19 vaccine maker shares sink as governments mull patent waiver By Ankur Banerjee, Lewis Krauskopf and Julien Ponthus Reuters (Reuters) - Shares of COVID-19 vaccine makers fell on Thursday as governments debated plans to waive patent protection for the shots, with analysts saying the move could rattle investor sentiment or weigh on longer-term business prospects. The declines came even as some analysts raised doubts about any near-term pressure on COVID-19 vaccine sales from discussions of waiving intellectual property rights, given the manufacturing complexity and scarcity of raw materials. Combined, Pfizer Inc and Moderna Inc have forecast a total of over $45 billion in sales this year for their COVID-19 vaccines.
