COPENHAGEN, March 1 (Xinhua) A formal letter of disapproval from the European Commission, sent to six European Union (EU) member states contravening the open border policy of the Schengen Treaty, has been met with silence or intransigence from government officials.
All six EU states have 10 days to respond to the commission after receiving the letter on Feb. 22. According to the EU laws, if the member states fail to undertake necessary measures, the commission could take legal actions against them.
CONCERNS OVER NEW COVID-19 VARIANTS
The four-page document, sent to Germany, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Belgium and Hungary, highlights the commission s concern that their unilateral border control measures to curb the spread of the pandemic risk fragmentation and disruptions to free movement and to supply chains, according to Christian Wigand, a spokesperson for the commission.

BRATISLAVA, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) Central Europe, which includes countries such as Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, is bracing for the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, topping the world in infection rate and death rate.
As COVID-19 continues dominating the agenda of governments in central Europe, new restrictive measures are introduced to prevent the outbreak from worsening. Governments also called on the public to strictly observe all kinds of orders and fight the epidemic together.
NEW RESTRICTIONS
The third wave of COVID-19 has hit Poland, with around 12,000 infections recorded on two consecutive days. Due to the situation, the Polish authorities stressed tighter rules on faces masks, mandating masks in public space starting Saturday, instead of the previously allowed alternatives including scarfs and visors.
