Armenian Ombudsman, Activists Deplore Toxic Election Campaign

Armenia’s human rights defender, Arman Tatoyan, has accused Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian and his political opponents of resorting to inflammatory rhetoric in their election campaigns, saying that could deepen a political crisis in the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, Tatoyan singled out Pashinian’s pledges to “purge” the state bureaucracy and wage “political vendettas” against local government officials supporting the Armenian opposition.
The ombudsman issued another statement the following morning urging election contenders to stop exploiting the issue of Armenian prisoners still held by Azerbaijan for political purposes. Human rights lawyers and activists added their voice to his appeal on Wednesday.

The head of an independent body empowered to nominate, sanction and fire judges on Friday accused Armenia’s political leadership of ordering criminal proceedings against him in a bid to replace him with a government ally.
Ruben Vartazarian told the Hraparak newspaper that he was formally charged with obstruction of justice on Thursday hours after the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) agreed to suspend him pending investigation.
Neither the SJC nor the Office of the Prosecutor-General gave any details of the criminal case.
Under Armenian law, judges and other judicial officials cannot be prosecuted on charges stemming from their professional activities without the SJC’s consent. The SJC said on Thursday that the case against its chairman not connected with the performance of his duties.
