patel, an msnbc medical contributor. maura, what s the latest? what do we know? reporter: according to the first lady s communication director, she confirmed the first lady tested positive via pcr test. she developed mild symptoms yesterday evening, monday evening despite testing negative on monday morning, during one of her covid testing cadences that the president and first lady do. when she started feeling the symptoms, she tested negative on an antigen test but then positive via pcr test. she s on vacation with the president and some family members. we know hunter and his wife have been here in south carolina. the first lady will stay here until she receives two negative covid tests. we haven t gotten updates on her symptoms this morning. we know she s been prescribed a round of paxlovid just like we saw the president had been when he initially tested positive. the first lady is 71 years old. we ll obviously be in touch with her office as the days go on to make sure we
police released footage showing the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old black man jalen walker. and later this hour, an update on wnba star brittney griner reaching out with a personal plea to president biden. we begin this morning with yet another community reeling and searching for answers after a mass shooting. hundreds of people gathered along a street in highland park, illinois, a half hour north of chicago. a gunman perched on a nearby roof opened fire seemingly at random. authorities say when the shooting stopped six people were dead. more than three dozen were injured. highland park mayor spoke with nbc s today show about how the community is coping. my greater focus this morning as the sun is rising is how my community is feeling. the unbelievable sadness and shock. this tragedy never should have arrived in our doorsteps and as a small town, everybody knows somebody who was affected by this directly. investigators say the gunman fled after dropping the weapon and
the suspect dressed in women s clothing. that is the disguise he used to try to get away after the shooting. police say this is something that had been planned for several weeks. the gunman used that disguise to try to sleep through the crowd. but investigators say he left behind a legally purchased assault rifle that the atf was able to trace to this person of interest now, who is behind bars as we speak, not yet charged. police say he fired off more than 70 rounds from a roof overlooking the parade. as we are learning more about some of the six victims killed and the nearly 50 others hurt by the gunshots and all the way hospital after this happened. we expect another update in just about an hour. you have the white house and all federal buildings with flags flying at half staff in memory of the highland park victims. we have a lot to get to over the next 60 minutes. cathy park is in illinois, pete williams, mike is covering the white house and we are joined by clint who
was dressed in women s clothing and investigators do believe he did this to conceal the tattoos and the identity and help him in the escape with the other people who were fleeing the chaos. after escaping in his mother s car that man robert primo tracked to lake forest and arrested. he is in custody but not charged. he fits a disturbingly pattern. police say they still don t know why the gunman opened fire on the parade but learning more about the six people killed. among them a 76-year-old grandfather shot three times while sitting in the wheelchair. among the 30 wounded several children, victims as young as 8, as old as 85. while it was the deadliest massacre in highland park this is far from the only shooting on the fourth of july. at least three dozen people shot and killed across the country yesterday. three dozen in mass shootings in at least seven cities leading to this question. is there some way to balance the right to bear arms with the freedom to live without fea
