The Esplanade river walk in 1906. Stories from the early 20th century make for fascinating study for family historians. The Palmerston North Genealogical Society, a branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists, is seeing its membership grow at a surprising rate. Its research day in April saw 71 enthusiasts from Manawatū, Wairarapa, Napier, Whanganui, Wellington and other towns crowd into its venue in the Kilwinning Lodge rooms, Church St. They heard talks, asked questions of experienced members and did research from the masses of books, maps, photos, online resources and other materials the society holds. The featured guest speaker was Gareth Winter, newly retired Wairarapa archivist and historian, and recipient last year of the Queen’s Service Medal for services to historical research.
