More international students will be able to come to Otago Uni from June, with 400 spots in MIQ set aside for international students.
The New Zealand International Students’ Association welcomed the news and said that the “lack of MIQ spaces has been a long-standing problem for returning individuals but today’s announcement provides certainty and clarity for our colleagues.” They say that they’re “excited to welcome back more international students.”
Even if more spots were opened up, there are concerns many cannot afford the steep financial hurdles of getting through MIQ facilities. The Uni is offering some support though. The 1000 international students allowed into New Zealand next month will pay increased MIQ fees.
For temporary visa holders like international students, the cost of a one-person stay in managed isolation will increase from $3100 to $5520 on 25 March. These international students are required to bring $20,000 of living costs and usually pay course fees of around $40,000 per year.
The New Zealand International Students Association said that the sudden hike in MIQ cost comes as an absolute shock to the international student community, especially now, as the second exemption cohort of 1000 international students are due to return as early as April.” They also said that “the revised fee structure only benefits the government at the expense of international students.”

On the 2nd of March 2021, the Ministry of Business,
Innovation and Employment revised the cost of Managed
Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) facilities for temporary visa
holders returning to New Zealand on and after the 25th of
March 2021. This revision saw a rise from $3,100 to $5,520
for one returnee, a 78% increase. For each additional adult,
the price was revised from $950 to $2,990, a 215% increase.
Finally, we saw a 239% increase for each additional child,
from $475 to $1,610.
The sudden hike in MIQ cost comes

especially now, as the second exemption cohort of 1000
international students are due to return as early as April.
