himself. this time it was pat cipollone. the authors report this, a discussion arose inside the white house about whether the president could perspectively pardon rudy giuliani and trump jr. and perhaps even himself to eliminate the risk of being charged. mark meadows was told, that was too far. cipollone wouldn t have any of it. he threatened to resign if the president issued such pardons. not only that, but he said he and many of his senior lawyers would resign en masse and hold a news conference announcing their strong objections. it was the death nail for the discussion. the white house could not afford to take anymore public shaming. here with us, tim miller, former communications director for jeb bush, and veteran republican
religious, less conservative and less white. in 2008, barack obama s election was to white christian conservatives, a kind of death nail. christian conservatives have lost. they lost the fight over their ability to define what it means to be an american. this desperation on the right was an opportunity for donald trump. i brought my bible. see? trump understood how to tap into the deep angle and sense of grievance that had been building among white christian conservatives for decades. christianity is under siege, folks. it is undersiege. the founders recognized how dangerous those sort of governments could be.
like this are in essence at their core political questions, not legal ones. it s really beyond the expertise of the courts to decide. and that was really a death nail for any of the partisan gerrymandering cases that were pending. so the supreme court had put this lower court ruling from the three-judge panel on hold. that was certainly a sign that the ruling by that panel on partisan gerrymandering was on life support. and today the supreme court, i guess, to continue this unfortunate metaphor, pulled the plug. and so this partisan gerrymandering decision from below is wiped off the books. now, where does this whole issue of partisan gerrymandering stand? it s a pretty clear signal from the supreme court that these lawsuits are not going to succeed in federal court based on a federal constitutional claim, but that doesn t mean they can t be filed in state courts on a state constitutional claim. so that s where the action is going to be.
it took hurt. for people to come out and put pressure on the president. particularly when it was parkland. we heard the same thing about background checks. but the nra, the nra stepped in and said no, no, no. the nra has the president. they ve got the m ares republic the senate. nothing s going to happen. we ve been dealing with issues of guns and mass shootings for decades now. this is an epidemic for real. and the problem is when you keep talking about it, and i ve been at the white house for 22 years. they were talking about closing the gun show loophole during bill clinton s time. it feels it s accelerated. the mass shootings. it has. and you have hr-8 in that house that will not get support in the senate. mitch mcconnell is running for office and that is a death nail for him. so the talk is going to happen. they re talking. there s no action. angela, i know this will appeal to you.
