13 additional COVID-19 cases reported in Zapata County Jan. 19, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail Zapata County officials announced an additional 13 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Overall, the county has 13,250 tests conducted, 11,769 negative results, 1,189 positive cases, 981 recovered, 292 pending tests and 21 deaths as of its latest count on Jan. 17. Officials remind the community that free oral swab COVID-19 testing began Tuesday and continues throughout Friday at the Zapata Community Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There’s a limit of 400 per day. Children 6 months and older can be tested. To lower the risk of COVID-19, the county recommends the following:  Maintain a distance of six feet or more from others.

Zapata County records 21st death, 80-plus COVID-19 cases Jan. 5, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail On Monday, County Judge Joe Rathmell confirmed the 21st death. He was a male in his 80s. “This has been verified by a local authority. The patient passed away at an area hospital late last week. On behalf of myself, my family, and all of Zapata County, we want to extend our most sincere condolences to the family,” Rathmell said in a statement. County officials also reported an additional 85 cases between Saturday and Sunday. Overall, the county has 11,569 tests conducted, 9,978 negative cases, 947 positive cases, 793 recovered, 644 tests pending and 21 deaths. County leaders reminded the community that free COVID-19 oral swab testing began Tuesday and ends Friday at the Zapata Community Center. Testing starts at 9 a.m. There’s a limit of 400 tests per day. Children who are 6 months old and older can be tested. Identification is required.
