‘He didn’t move,’ says student who witnessed restraint of 16-year-old killed at Kalamazoo facility

KALAMAZOO, MI – When a student at Lakeside Academy was restrained by staff, the other students were told to look away.
But, they still saw parts of the 10-minute restraint that led to the death of 16-year-old Cornelius Fredricks on April 29, according to body camera footage from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety obtained by MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette through a Freedom of Information Act request.
“I turned around and I seen Corn or Cornelius throwing food and stuff at another student,” said one student interviewed by police. “Staff was telling him to stop doing it and he continued doing it. They tried to grab and restrain him and that’s when they restrained him … I left the cafeteria because I was upset.”
