The No. 1 seed Texas Longhorns got off to a rough start in the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday in Oklahoma City, falling to the No. 8 seed West Virginia Mountaineers 5-1 to set up an elimination game at 12:30 p.m. Central on ESPNU.
Texas will face the loser of No. 4 seed Oklahoma State and No. 5 seed Oklahoma.
Facing West Virginia’s No. 1 starter Jackson Wolf for the second time in less than a week, Texas only managed five hits and five walks as Wolf struck out seven and pitched the first complete game for the Mountaineers this season. AT 6’7 and with a low release point, Wolf was able to confound Texas hitters with a fastball that never reached much above 90 miles per hour.
The Texas Longhorns found a way to cool down TCU and make sure the Big 12 Conference race goes down to the final weekend.
The Longhorns (38-12, 15-6 Big 12) closed out the series win with a 9-3 victory Sunday in a showdown of top 10 teams at TCU. They re still a game behind the Horned Frogs (34-12, 16-5), who have been one of the nation s hottest teams.
David Pierce s team delivered in a series that the Texas coach presented as âtruly an opportunity to play in a super regional setting and face the challenges going in on the road and seeing what we re made of.â

Mike Antico transferred to test himself in big games.
In the biggest game of the season for the No. 6 Texas Longhorns, the center fielder from New Jersey came through with a huge performance, including by setting the tone on the first pitch, doubling down the line, and providing some of the most important winning plays for the Longhorns (37-11, 14-5) in a 5-4 win against the No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs (33-11, 15-4) in front of a vocal crowd in Fort Worth on Friday.
Antico scored on that double thanks to a triple from first baseman Zach Zubia, then again on a two-out single from Zubia in the sixth after drawing a walk. In the bottom half the inning, Antico saved at least one run on a sinking liner in left-center field to retire the side with runners on first and second.

The No. 6 Texas Longhorns (36-11) remained undefeated at home in midweek games to set up the massive Cowtown Showdown this weekend against No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs by beating the Texas State Bobcats 4-1 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday.
It was hardly the type of dominating performance that the Longhorns turned in throughout most of the midweek games this season, but five pitchers combined to allow only three hits and a single earned run on a home run given up by right-hander Drew Shifflet.
Left-hander Lucas Gordon went three innings with one hit allowed and zero walks in his first career start, right-hander Cole Quintanilla grabbed his fourth win of the season by pitching two perfect innings with three strikeouts, right-hander Tanner Witt struck out all three batters he faced, and right-hander Aaron Nixon earned his sixth save working the ninth inning.
Fatigued No. 3 Texas battles past Incarnate Word in 5-3 win

A doubleheader on Saturday helped the No. 3 Texas Longhorns extend its winning streak to 16 games. A seven-hour bus ride back from Stillwater followed the Sunday loss against the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
A large number of players then received their second shot of the vaccine on Monday, with head coach David Pierce estimating that 95 percent of the team is now fully vaccinated as program management incentives caused the staff to ask some players to delay that second shot.
So Tuesday’s midweek game against Incarnate Word was about winning first, but it was also about managing a fatigued team facing a huge conference series at home against Texas Tech this weekend.
