The Giants aren’t necessarily done building their roster for 2021, but they have added a lot of new players through the two biggest events of the offseason: Free agency and the NFL Draft.
Their moves also paint a picture of how they feel about certain players and position groups already on the roster, and that crystalized after last week’s draft, where they added six new players to the roster.

The work done in the 2021 NFL Draft by New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman surprised and impressed many who follow the NFL. That work included the first two trades back in nine drafts as a GM, players considered good value at each of the Giants’ six picks, three picks added in the first four rounds of the 2022 draft, including a first-rounder.
Scouting Academy Director Dan Hatman, who worked briefly in the Giants’ scouting deparment while Gettleman was the team’s top pro personnel man, thinks the draft was really Gettleman showing his true colors. Especially the idea that Gettleman would willingly accumulate future assets when, if the Giants aren’t good in 2021, he might not be the GM deciding how to use them.

A big concern for New York Giants fans was the lack of investment into the offensive line during the 2021 NFL Draft, specifically the interior. New York traded back twice, picked up extra capital for the 2022 draft (
10 selections), and traded up once to draft UCF cornerback Aaron Robinson.
The Giants had to add skilled position players to bolster their roster this season, so Daniel Jones can have a shot to maximize his potential. Adding Kenny Golladay, John Ross, Kyle Rudolph while drafting Kadarius Toney, and getting a healthy Saquon Barkley back will allow Jones to live up to the sixth overall selection.

Russell in Pennsylvania: Why wouldn t the Giants have looked to someone like Trey Smith in the draft? His size, wing span, speed and knowledge would have helped out on the offensive line. Or is the team still looking at a veteran free agent?
John Schmeelk: Trey Smith had issues with blood clots in his lungs early in his college career. Every team will do their own medical evaluation of a player and come to different conclusions and those things are kept private. GM Dave Gettleman said the team had interest in offensive linemen on Day 2 of the draft, but they were taken before their slots came up. The Giants have already added a number of veterans, including Kenny Wiggins (38 NFL starts), Zach Fulton (90) and Jonotthan Harrison (42). If the team sees an upgrade, it may decide it is worth the cost of acquiring that player, but it s unlikely they will add another veteran for the sake of signing another one.
