The ACC standings just got a whole lot more interesting.Â
After Notre Dame handed the Blue Devils their first loss of the Michael Sowers era, Virginia continued its rise up the league standings with a 18-16 win against North Carolina behind eight Matt Moore points and a dominant performance from face-off specialist Petey LaSalla.Â
Mooreâs six assists facilitated the offense at important junctures, including three straight helpers at the end of the third quarter to give the No. 6 Cavaliers (9-2) a 13-10 lead, the largest margin of the game at that point.Â
âThatâs the balance weâre looking for. When Matt Moore is facilitating and distributing like a quarterback, our offense is gonna be difficult to handle,â Virginia coach Lars Tiffany said.Â

No. 4 Virginia looks like a different team since its last loss almost a month ago to No. 3 UNC.
The Cavaliers reversed that result and prevailed 18-16 to hand the Tar Heels (8-2) (1-2 ACC) its second consecutive loss on an afternoon where two of the top three ranked teams in the country fell to conference rivals in the increasingly chaotic ACC.
In a frenetic game that featured 95 shots (UNC 51, UVA 44), Virginia (9-2) (2-2 ACC) made the most of theirs when it counted. The Cavaliers ended the third quarter on four goal run to take a 13-10 lead into the final frame. Petey LaSalla then extended it to 14-10 only 12 twelve seconds into the fourth quarter. The junior faceoff specialist also set a new career high with 26 face-off wins (out of 38) and neutralized UNC’s duo of Zac Tucci (4-of-15) and Andrew Tyeryar (8-of-23).

5. Notre Dame Irish students and alums stand for the school fight song. Saturday afternoon they were dancing after an 18-11 victory over Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. St Patrick Kavanagh finished with nine points. He is playing himself into Tewaraaton conversation. The groundball and face-off stats tell the story, with Notre Dame holding a 45-20 edge in grounders while winning 23-of-32 face-offs. The rest takes care of itself. After a close home loss to Virginia last week, the Irish were ready to battle. This was the exact response you hope to see. Their EMO continues to percolate. Eric Dobson, Griffin Westlin and Will Yorke all stung corners. The FOGOs, defense and goaltending plus bench role players have Rudy dreaming of its first NCAA title.
Mike Adler has the best seat in the house.
“The best part about being goalie is you see all of what happens in front of you. To see the whole defense swarm and all them run to the corner of the field was so awesome,” he said. “We were screaming the whole time.”
What he saw was Joe Robertson’s big moment, the attackman who’s battled injury, scoring the overtime game-winner in No. 1 Duke’s 12-11 win against No. 2 North Carolina inside Koskinen Stadium.
Robertson’s view was a little different.
“I kinda blacked out there,” he said. “It’s kinda surreal still. It hasn’t hit me.”
