Sunshine Coast and Districts Rugby Referees Association president Shaun McCormack, the state s top senior referee Zac Keenan, Sunshine Coast and Gympie Rugby League Referees Association president Vic Collins and rising AFL Sunshine Coast umpire Jake Edgar have all shared their thoughts. While agreeing crowd abuse wasn t getting worse, they said it was still a regular occurrence, more so at the junior levels of sport.

EXPERIENCES WITH CROWD ABUSE
Football Football Queensland s senior referee of 2020 Zac Keenan said he d been on the receiving end of abuse in the past, but found with the older and higher level matches it was less common.
âIt was great and a little bit of a surprise,â he said.
âIt was maybe a long time coming in some ways but it was obviously quite a privilege.â
Keenan said the award had him hungry to break into the top flight of the sport in Australia.
Judges noted his âplayer management, excellent teamwork and calm demeanourâ, along with consistency, as catalysts behind the award.
âWith winning this medal the next aim for me personally is to be looking towards national league, so that s A-league for me,â he said,
âItâs definitely put a bit more fire into the motivation side of things.â
