Prototype sections for Russified Superjet s PD-8 engine emerge

By David Kaminski-Morrow2021-04-13T18:00:00+01:00 Russia’s United Engine has completed manufacturing work on the primary components of a prototype Aviadvigatel PD-8 powerplant. The PD-8 is a lower-thrust variant of a family which centres on the PD-14 designed for the Irkut MC-21-310. It is intended for eventual use on the Sukhoi Superjet 100 as a fully-domestic alternative to the PowerJet SaM146. The SaM146 is jointly produced by French and Russian firms, with Safran responsible for the high-profile core section. Sections produced for the PD-8 include the high-pressure compressor, integrated discs, combustion chamber, and high-pressure turbine and the next stage will involve assembly.

MC-21 s Russian-built Engines Pass ICAO Emissions Test

The certification was awarded under ICAO Chapter 16 Vol. III Environmental Protection rules. Developed Using Russian Tech The engine, entirely developed using Russian technology, was first certified by the Russian Federal Air transport Agency (FATA) in 2018 and complied with ICAO standards. With the additional certification, UEC Aviadvigatel PD-14 engine will meet all requirements to perform international flights. On this subject UEC Deputy Director General Yuri Shmotin said, “MC-21-310 aircraft with PD-14 engines will be able to perform international flights. The second important point is that Russia will now be able to supply aircraft with engines manufactured by the UEC to the international market.”
