Ito and Ovtcharov win WTT Contender singles titles in Doha

Saturday, 6 March 2021 Japan’s Mima Ito and Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov won the singles titles on finals day at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender tournament in Doha, Qatar. As well as the men’s and women’s singles finals, the showpiece match were also contested in the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles at the Lusail Multipurpose Hall. The women’s singles final affair was an all Japanese match-up with Ito taking on her compatriot Hina Hiyata. Ito took the first two games of the contest 11-9, 11-8 before Hiyata fought back, claiming the next two 11-6, 11-9.

Punch Newspapers Sections Published 6 March 2021 Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri, the only surviving African in the men’s singles of the World Table Tennis Contender Series, bowed out in the quarter-finals in Doha, Qatar on Friday, after losing 3-1 to Chinese Taipei’s Yun-Ju Lin. Aruna, who is ranked 21 in the world, was set up against world number seven in the quarter-finals after his triumph over Joao Geraldo of Portugal in the round of 16. Aruna’s powerful forehand most times confused his opponent but his inaccuracy in backhand became his undoing and this earned Lin some points in the first game, which ended 11-8 in favour of Lin.

Aruna Quadri knocked out of World Table Tennis Championship Nigeria s Aruna Quadri went as far as the WTT quarter-final stage before losing to a better-ranked player Africa’s No.1 one male Table Tennis player, Aruna Quadri, was shown the exit door at the Quadri, ranked 21st in the world was knocked out in the quarter-final by Yun-Ju Lin of Chinese Taipei who is ranked seventh in the world. Quadri gave his best but his best was not enough to see him through in a close contest which he lost 3-1 (8-11, 9-11, 17-15, 9-11). Though he lost out to the more fancied and better-ranked Lin, the 32-year-old Nigeria set a record of being the first African to play in the quarter of WTT.
