Single-payer health care measure advances PUBLISHED 5:30 AM ET Apr. 20, 2021 PUBLISHED 5:30 AM EDT Apr. 20, 2021 SHARE A bill that would pave the way for a single-payer health care system in New York cleared the Assembly Health Comittee on Monday as its supporters argue the measure is needed following the COVID-19 pandemic exposing deep flaws in the current system.  Opponents, however, continued to argue on Monday the bill would be ruinous for the state s finances as well as for employment in the health care sector.  The measure has been a long-sought one for Assembly Health Committee Chairman Richard Gottfried, a Democrat and the longest-serving lawmaker in Albany. 

Progressive Advocates Unite Around Tax-the-Rich Push in NY

PUBLISHED 5:46 AM ET Jan. 08, 2021 PUBLISHED 5:46 AM EST Jan. 08, 2021 SHARE Advocacy groups from across the state this week are backing a united push to increase taxes and end tax breaks on upper income earners in New York in a bid to raise $50 billion in revenue ahead of a contentious state budget season.  The groups range from labor unions like DC 37 and PSC-CUNY in New York City to tenant advocacy organizations in Rochester and local progressive organizations with chapters in Tompkins County and Buffalo.  The effort is falling under the organization of the Alliance for Quality Education, a group that has been at odds over the years with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, clashing with him on increasing aid for schools in New York.
