TOKYO - China s Chen Meng lived up to her status as the world No 1 by overcoming compatriot Sun Yingsha 4-2 to claim the Olympic gold medal in table tennis women s singles competition here on Thursday.
Chen came out the winner in the all-Chinese final, 9-11, 11-6, 11-4, 5-11, 11-4 and 11-9.
It s another major title for top-ranked Chen, following her success at the ITTF World Cup in November last year.

SINGAPORE - President Halimah Yacob and other public figures paid tribute to the efforts and sacrifice of swimmer Joseph Schooling and his fellow national athletes competing at the Tokyo Olympics and urged Singaporeans to support them in both good times as well as bad ones.
Madam Halimah wrote on Facebook on Friday (July 30): I feel sad looking at how unkind we can be towards each other. One moment, we carry people to the highest pedestal with our words, yet the next moment we thrash them to the ground just because they fail to live up to our expectations.

Winning this match would guarantee her a silver medal, while losing the match would give her one more chance to win a bronze.
Chen won four sets with a score of: 11-6, 11-8 and 11-7, 11-6.
In the fourth set, play was stopped for Yu’s knee injury to be attended to.
Chen is China s top-ranked paddler and is ranked #1 in the world. She is also the first female table tennis player to win four consecutive titles at the ITTF World Tour Grand Finals after winning the 2020 edition in Zhengzhou.
On Tuesday (July 27), Yu beat Japan s Kasumi Ishikawa and Taiwan s Cheng I-Ching of Taiwan.
