What just happened? Opera released the world s first gaming browser back in 2019: Opera GX. It features RAM and CPU usage limiters, a dedicated tab for tracking game release dates, and several other features designed to appeal to PC gamers. However, Opera s gaming ambitions don t stop there: it has just purchased YoYo Games, the folks behind one of the most newbie-friendly game engines on the market; GameMaker Studio 2.
This news was announced on Opera s official blog today, so it seems the acquisition went through fairly recently.
With YoYo Games under its wing, Opera has created a new division, aptly called Opera Gaming. Its core focus will be on expanding Opera s reach and capabilities within the gaming space, whatever that means.
Opera has announced that is has acquired the Dundee-based developer of 2D game engine GameMaker Studio, YoYo Games.
GameMaker Studio has long been a favourite of students and indie developers. The engine is responsible for breakout indie hits such as Spelunky, Undertale, Hotline Miami, Hyper Light Drifter and Nidhogg, among many more.
Stuart Poole, GM at YoYo Games stated, “For over twenty years, the vision behind the GameMaker engine was to not just create more games, but expand development within and beyond the game studio. We think the transaction with Opera – whose products are known, trusted and used worldwide by millions of people every month- represents a massive opportunity to accelerate fulfilment of that founding vision, during a period of exceptional growth for both companies.”

Opera has announced the acquisition of YoYo Games, the company behind GameMaker Studio 2, a platform that helps users build 2D games on desktop, mobile, Web, and consoles. Opera said that it plans to expand its reach and capabilities in the gaming space using GameMaker Studio 2 and Opera GX, its browser targeted at gamers that the company launched in 2019.
