With the rivalry between members of the muscle car segment only getting fiercer, owners are doing everything they can to make sure the other parties are the ones that end up staring at the taillights. And the race we have here, which involves a Dodge Charger Hellcat Widebody and a 2019 Ford Mustang GT, brings a fresh example of this. 6 photos
The latest tech update of the pony has brought the GT closer to supercharged Mopar territory than ever before - introduced for the 2018 model year, the revamp brought the third-gen Coyote, with the 5.0-liter V8 delivering 460 hp and 420 lb-ft (569 Nm) from the factory. Then there s the optional ten-speed auto, which is just what the doctor ordered for racing.

The 2015 model year was a brilliant one for muscle cars, with Ford introducing the sixth-generation Mustang, with its independent rear suspension, and Dodge dropping the Hellcat bomb. With or without aftermarket assistance, the two have been battling ever since and it doesn t look like they plan to stop anytime soon. Case in point with the race we have here, which sees both muscle cars packing respectable mods. 6 photos
In the Mopar corner, we have a Challenger Hellcat that sports full bolt-on goodies, while sipping on E85. And while the factory incarnation of its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI churns out 707 hp, the new muscle number of the machine isn t mentioned. Oh, and yes, this example of the coupe comes with the eight-speed automatic.

The Stang in question is a member of the previous S197 generation, but this GT has been taken quite far from its factory form. As such, the Gen I Coyote under the hood is no longer a N/A unit, with the 5.0-liter V8 now being assisted by a Whipple supercharger - you can check out the blower, with its cold air intake, in the piece of footage below (lens tip to YouTuber
Can I Be Frank).
We re still looking at a stock motor here, but the unit obviously features a host of supporting mods, with an E85 setup being on the list.

Tech progress aside, there are plenty of ways in which modern muscle cars differ from the ones that kickstarted the genre over five decades ago: from the fact that superchargers are available straight from the showroom these days, to various body style changes. However, the good old rivalries are very much alive, with the race we have here, which involves a Ford Mustang GT and a Dodge Charger Hellcat, being an example as good as any. 6 photos
As far as the Mopar team is concerned, we re dealing with a Dodge Charger Hellcat Widebody. The muscle sedan came to the fight in factory form, which means the 6.2-liter HEMI under the hood works with a blower to deliver 707 hp. And, unlike its two-door sibling, the Charger Hellcat only comes in eight-speed auto form.
With modern automatic transmissions having evolved to deliver quicker shifts than manuals, choosing your gearbox has never been more difficult for certain drivers. That is especially true for, say, those who wish to daily drive their muscle cars, but will also engage in racing every now and then. Well, the drivers of the Mustang GT and Camaro SS in the adventure we have here certainly knew what they wanted and it involved a third pedal.
