many people. they just don t understand it. they re not used to seeing it. that s an important point you make there. what tonight does, it puts a spotlight on what malcolm x called the victims of democracy. right here, you see people who are subject to mass unemployment, youth unemployment rate extremely high in baltimore, other cities like new york, cleveland, philadelphia and so forth. you also have a lot of street violence, state violence. you have decorporate representative decrepit schools. it s the spark that sets the powder keg on fire. when you connect that to an uprising across the country, really across the globe when you add these other nation states, what you see is an international wave of frustration and
and brace yourself, it s not a good time to be young in america. listen to these stunning statistics. students who are graduateiating college are now graduating more in debt than ever before. $33,000 per student. more people under 30 are moving back in with their parents than ever before. and the youth unemployment rate is more than twice as high as the national average. now that a new congress is taking over. will either side step up with a plan to turn things around for young americans? and joining us our political panel, the national journal s emily shol ties and washington examiner correspondent byron york. let s first talk about the fact 33,000 in did he want. that much debt? that is a huge number. that is more than the to be a year. it s huge amount. more than double what it was. inflation adjusted dollars. 20 years ago. and the only solution you hear from a lot of members of congress is just to make
raising more money and going to a fundraiser. it goes on and on. in new zealand, it is an amazing country. lot of things america had even in the 50s. but they have this feel to me. that is just sad. how much of it deals with the economy, it is a really hard time right now. think of your everyday life when you feel most free. when you have money to spend. you feel the most freedom. with the youth unemployment rate almost 20% in this country, people are not getting a sense of freedom. this is a very recent thing, back in 2006 we were still

at 63%. that s the lowest since 1978. the youth unemployment rate, this number is at 21.4%. a lot of the youth were ardent supporters of president obama. so where do they stand now? i m hearing a lot of disappointment and i m hearing a lot of frustration. that s channeled, i think, as flippancy. to me, i think of it as the first resort of a person who feels helpless. millenials are feeling helpless. but my hope is that that flippancy is channeled into becoming more informed and taking steps to make a difference instead of using those bad numbers as an opportunity to check out and lose hope. let s look at another issue. food stamps, welfare. the percentage of the population on food stamps last year rose to 50%. that s the highest level ever. 47 million people are on that. the numbers have doubled under president obama. of course, people who need food
