In countries affected by violent conflict, a successful transition from conflict to peace is often dependent on the establishment of increased stability, human security and the creation of a climate of confidence paving the way for necessary peacebuilding and recovery activities. Within this transition, the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of former combatants (DDR) is instrumental, seeking to increase security levels and to enable those associated with armed groups to (re)join mainstream society. DDR as an integrated process through which members of armed groups are supported to return to civilian life represents both an output of conflict resolution and a facilitator for peacebuilding. Support to integrated DDR can consist of DDR programmes, DDR-related tools and reintegration support outside of a DDR programme and can be implemented before, during and after conflict.
