Two years ago, in May 2019, the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Qabas published a frightening report that someone close to Jordan’s King Abdullah was planning a coup. Shortly afterward, Abdullah fired his chief of intelligence, Adnan al-Jundi, and even before then, he had fired several aides and officials close to him in what he termed a “reorganization of the court.”
At the time, it seemed like the king had thwarted an attempted coup at the last minute. But Arab analysts said these resonant steps were actually meant to appease Jordanian public opinion following a period of large protests during which the demonstrators not only demanded jobs, tax cuts and a war on corruption, but also assailed the king and demanded his ouster.
