Brendan O Hara urges Electoral Commission to respond to pro-Union ad concerns

SNP MP for Argyll and Bute, Brendan O Hara, has written to the electoral regulator about concerns AN SNP MP has written to the Electoral Commission over concerns that groups spending thousands on pro-Union ads flouted online advert rules in the run-up to last week s election. It was revealed earlier this week that in the days before the Scottish Parliament election third-party campaigns - with no clear details of where their funding comes from - spent tens of thousands of pounds on digital ads pushing Scots to vote tactically. Brendan O Hara called on the Electoral Commission, the independent election regulator, for a comprehensive response , saying that the ads “may be contrary to election law and regulations”.

Did Unionist tactical voting ads stop SNP from winning key target seats?

THE SNP may have lost target seats because pro-Union groups spent tens of thousands of pounds on digital ads pushing tactical voting, an investigation has revealed. The SNP and Scottish Greens won a total of 72 seats in Holyrood on a record turnout for the Scottish Parliament elections of 63% – 10% higher than the previous average. But an OpenDemocracy report found the party could have lost key seats, which prevented them from achieving an outright majority, due to  social media adverts with a lack of transparency over funding. The site found a group called Young Unionists spent more than £20,000 on Facebook ads, including more than £5000 in the final days of the campaign. Tens of thousands of voters were pushed to the VoteUnion tactical voting tool.

Pro-UK activists spend heavily to head off SNP majority at Holyrood

Last modified on Wed 5 May 2021 08.50 EDT Anti-independence campaigners have spent tens of thousands of pounds in the past week calling for tactical voting to prevent the Scottish National party winning a Holyrood majority. At least five pro-UK groups have bought newspaper adverts, mobile ad vans and electronic billboard sites, and numerous adverts on Facebook, urging voters to support election candidates most likely to beat an SNP candidate. Scotland Matters, a group co-founded by Prof Hugh Pennington, a bacteriologist in Aberdeen who rose to prominence during E coli food poisoning outbreaks in the 1990s, registered with the Electoral Commission so it can spend up to £75,000 on tactical voting adverts during the election.
