Botticelli Painting Sells For $92 Million At Auction In New York City
NEW YORK (AP) A small painting by Sandro Botticelli sold at Sotheby’s in New York on Thursday for $92.2 million, an auction record for the Renaissance master.
The work, “Young Man Holding a Roundel,” from about 1475, depicts a young nobleman holding a round painting of a saint. It is one of just three portraits in private hands by the artist best known for “The Birth of Venus” and “Primavera.”
“This is not only an exceptional painting, it is also the epitome of beauty, and of a moment when so much of our Western civilization began,” said Christopher Apostle, head of Sotheby’s Old Masters Painting department in New York. “Today’s result is a fitting tribute, both to the painting itself and all that it represents.”

A small painting by Sandro Botticelli fetched $US92.2 million ($120 million) at auction at Sothebyâs on Thursday, in the art marketâs first big test of the new year.
The result, an auction record for the Renaissance painter, was also the highest price paid for an old master work since Leonardo da Vinciâs
Salvator Mundi sold for $US450 million in 2017. It also represented a windfall for the foundation of billionaire Sheldon Solow, who had bought it for about $US1.3 million in 1982. The proceeds from the sale may be used to establish a private museum in Manhattan.

The Centre Pompidou in Paris will close for renovations for three years from late 2023. Serge Lasvignes, the president of the museum, said that the essential maintenance work would ‘guarantee the future’ of the building; the famous structure, designed by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano in the 1970s, is showing signs of wear and tear. The aim is for the works, which include removal of asbestos, treatment of corrosion and updating energy systems, to be completed in time for the 50th anniversary of the centre in 2027.
