(Central News Agency/ Kyodo) TAIPEI (Kyodo) A man held on suspicion of causing Taiwan s worst train derailment in seven decades was positively identified as being at the scene of the accident, authorities said on Tuesday. Wang Kwo-tsai, deputy minister of transportation and communications, confirmed that the suspect, Lee Yi-hsiang, is the man seen in a photograph, believed to have been taken by a survivor of the accident, standing on top of a hill looking down at the accident with other spectators, whose identities have yet to be confirmed.

The packed train carrying almost 500 passengers and crew slammed into a truck near the eastern city of Hualien on Friday, causing it to derail and the front and middle parts to crumple. It was the island s worst rail accident in seven decades.
The truck had slid down a sloping road from a building site onto the tracks just outside a tunnel. Officials suspect the truck s brakes were not properly applied and are investigating the manager of the site.

The runaway truck that caused Taiwan’s worst rail disaster in decades slid onto the train tracks just over a minute before an express train came through at more than 120km/h, investigators have said, as newly released footage revealed the drivers’ attempts to brake.
At least 50 people were killed and around 200 injured on Friday last week when the eight-car train hit a construction vehicle that had rolled down an embankment, derailing the carriages as they entered a stretch of tunnel just outside the east coast city of Hualien.

On Tuesday (April 6), the Taiwan Transportation Safety Board (TTSB) provided the findings of the preliminary investigation into the accident based on data obtained from the train s event recorder and dashcam video footage. The presentation included video footage showing the final 10 seconds before the train s engine slammed into the truck.
