The quintessential tale of an immigrant Asian family struggling to realise the dream of a good life in America,
Minari, has won Korean actor Yuh-jung Youn her first Oscar as Best Supporting Actress at the 93
rd Academy Awards. It is the first time in the 93-year history of the awards that a female Korean actor took home the coveted trophy. The 73-year-old is also the first Asian performer to win an acting Oscar since 1985.
Youn’s performance towered over some punch-packing ones like that of Glenn Close in
Hillbilly Elegy, Olivia Colman in
The Father and Amanda Seyfried in
Mank. Youn was, however, the favourite this time, after she bagged both, the Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA awards for the category.
