The Japanese government should urgently undertake wide-ranging reforms, including amending the criminal procedure code, to ensure detainees their fair trial rights and make investigators and prosecutors more accountable.

Police in Tokyo have served a second arrest warrant against a 29-year-old former nursery school teacher, already charged with murder, for sexually assaulting a minor. The suspect, Yoshito Sato, has been indicted for killing a woman and burying her body last year.
Police said Sato is accused of sexually assaulting an elementary school girl last November, Fuji TV reported. The girl was returning home from school in Shinjuku Ward when Sato approached her and touched the lower half of her body. Sato was quoted by police as saying, “I couldn t control my urge.”
