Second Republic politician and a foundation member of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Mallam Tanko Yakassai, has offered an insight into why the Northern Region opposed the first motion for self-government for Nigeria.
The first motion for self-government which sought independence for Nigeria in 1956, was tabled in 1953 by foremost anti-colonial and pro-democracy activist, Chief Anthony Eromosele Enahoro, a member of the defunct Action Group.
Mallam Yakassai, a nonagenarian, in a piece entitled, “Leadership Question and the Issue of Nigeria’s National Unity,” he wrote on the occasion of his 94th birthday attributed the fear of domination of the Northern Region by the Eastern and Western Region as responsible for the North resistance to the first motion for self-government.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how Messrs Fani-Kayode and Bakare engaged in a war of words over a sermon by the latter praising the former governor of Lagos, Bola Tinubu, as a good and courageous leader.
Mr Bakare condemned political leaders castigating Mr Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for his style of politics.

The Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church in Lagos, Pastor Tunde Bakare, and a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, have settled their differences caused by a sermon delivered by Bakare wherein he praised a former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu.
Bakare had in a sermon last week, lambasted Tinubu’s critics and praised the former governor’s political sagacity.
He had said, “I have a word for those Yoruba rancorous elements, noisemakers that have not achieved as much as Asiwaju Tinubu has achieved, but are always querying and worrying themselves about his ancestry.
Fani-Kayode confirmed the peace meeting on Wednesday, noting that his “respect for Pastor Bakare remains high.”

The Yoruba Summit Group (YSG) and Chief Executive Officer of Ovation Media Group, Chief Dele Momodu, have intervened in the dispute between a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and the Senior Pastor of the Citadel Global Community, Lagos State, Tunde Bakare.
The YSG Spokesperson, Gboyega Adejumo, and Momodu on Wednesday reportedly held a meeting with the two parties where a truce was reached.
Fani-Kayode confirmed the peace meeting on Wednesday, noting that his “respect for Pastor Bakare remains high.”
