NY Chinatown Looks Magical After Being Lit Up with Hundreds of Lanterns Hundreds of Chinese lanterns have lit up a street of New York’s Chinatown to encourage more people to visit the area and act as a beacon of hope for the community amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Light Up Chinatown project began as an idea by 46 Mott Street Bakery manager, Patrick Mock, when he noticed how dark the block was at night, according to Time Out. With help coming from City Council District 1 candidate Jenny Low, Chung Seto of United Democratic Organization (UDO), Joanne Kwong of Pearl River Mart and the Send Chinatown Love movement, Mock was able to turn his dream of lighting up his community into reality.

CHINATOWN, Manhattan (WABC) After two months raising funds for the Light Up Chinatown initiative, community partners on Wednesday announced the successful completion of having lights and lanterns up on Mott Street in time for the holidays. The historic project brought together intergenerational group of business and civic leaders, talented artists, dedicated advocates and activists to safeguard Chinatown s recovery from the pandemic. It also included a significant contribution from award-winning actor and musician Will Smith. The Light Up Chinatown initiative was the brainchild of Patrick Mock, community advocate and manager of 46 Mott Street Bakery. We need confidence out here and this is a confidence boost for the neighborhood, Mock said. So this is like my light up Chinatown project.
