Excavations From Hakata Ruins Imply Port’s Importance
Artifacts and architectural items believed to have been used between the late 11th Century and early 12th Century were excavated from the ‘Hakata Ruins’ in Fukuoka City. The city has been investigating the sites of the former Reisen Elementary School since 2018 and first discovered the masonry in 2019. The 60-centimeter high wall stretches about 70 meters. Researchers believe that the whole structure is part of international port facilities that supported trade between Japan and Song (a then-state in China.) The large number of excavated items, including pottery and chinaware, signifies the port’s importance to Japan.n. The remains are currently being backfilled and cannot be visited.
