Terrace House near Demachiyanagi / atelier Luke

© Yohei Sasakura Given the age and condition of the original building, much of the structure was augmented or replaced to comply with contemporary requirements for seismic safety and fire resistance. The exterior fabric was further adapted to provide improved thermal efficiency, acoustic separation and overall resilience. © Yohei Sasakura A simple and refined palette of materials is used throughout and was  selected to best utilize skilled local carpenters and plasterers. A close  working relationship with the builder and local suppliers allowed all timber to be sourced from the same managed forests in the Yoshino region of nearby Nara. This versatile cedar plays all roles; from structure, to joinery, cabinetry, linings and external cladding. Natural finishes of linseed oil and tannin-based stains were selected to complement the natural durability of the timber, allowing the material to age gracefully without maintenance.

Yukawa Design Lab s Margin House features a multipurpose atrium

Japanese architect Kohei Yukawa has designed a house for himself and his family in a suburb of Osaka, featuring flexible living spaces arranged around a double-height atrium with a tree at its centre. Yukawa, co-founder of Yukawa Design Lab, designed the Margin House in response to the unique conditions of its urban site in Ibaraki City, to the north of Osaka. The inclusion of voids and openings, described by the architect as margins , connect the building with the city, the sky and the neighbouring field.

Dark roof brings loftiness to small Terrace House near Demachiyanagi

Japanese-Australian architecture studio Atelier Luke has renovated an old Kyoto row house, giving the narrow home a black-stained timber ceiling to create a spacious void of shadows . Named Terrace House near Demachiyanagi, the home has a historic facade that Atelier Luke restored while bringing contemporary Japanese and Australian design sensibilities into the interior. Perhaps counterintuitively, they did so by staining the timber of the upper storey and ceiling black.
