situations as a passenger on that plane to go through severe weather. you talk about anyone who s on an airplane and turbulence, they feel that this is the end for them. most people in aviation will tell you that most likely, you will be fined. they will bet money that you will be fined because these planes are built to handle it. the key is, the person at the controls, they have to be able to handle it and they have to react in the proper way. yeah. renae, as you ve covered mh 370 along with all of us when it happened in march of this year, many will be looking and really hoping and praying that the way information is disseminated an the way this search and rescue operation is conducted is very different to what happened in that case so make it clear, we are talking about air asia indonesia here but people will be hoping lessons have been learned. absolutely. you know, already we re seeing as far as the air line goes, the dissemination of information is happening rather quickly. y
situation. what do you make of what you ve heard so far again weather seems to be center stage in the situation. yeah. it looks like weather was involved in this, yes. and as you hear that the pilot asked to deviate, to avoid clouds, what does that say to you. help us understand why the pilot would have made such a request. they probably had some kind of problem. maybe they were able to have turbulence or some kind of problem so they want to change altitude to be safe. okay. we re looking at the situation looking at this region. we understand that this is a very busy route that the flight was flighting from indonesia to singapore. give me some perspective on the route itself and level of
thunder storms this time of year. this is called the northeast monsoon. what we re seeing is a northeasterly wind from the south china sea that is our moftumoft u moist you re source. once it encounters land across this mountainous region, it gets the updraft necessary to create the thunder storm activity. remember thunder storms have updraft and updrafts create turbulence. that s one of the many factors that can create turbulence. wind can create turbulence. flying through a jet stream. proximity to mountain ranges, you name it. lots of occurrences can yocreat turbulence. we re got mountains and the north eastern winds and on a separated unrelated note we ve been talking about the heavy flooding that occurred across the border of thailand and malaysia. you can see that the active
weather. the pilot broke apart and they lost everybody onboard. it s very difficult in certain parts of the world, i m assuming that these pilots were relying on their onboard radar. we all know that air liners have a radar set aboard and of course we know that weather does present a real threat as in the air alger case in july but turbulence, the rain itself can affect the performance. you ve got lightning and also hail. so if this guy this pilot, i m assuming it s a guy, is asking to deviate around weather. he s probably seeing something on his onboard radar set. here is the problem with onboard radar. you only see the first curtain of water for those of us who have used this, you can t see what s behind the curtain if you can follow what i m trying to say. sometimes you re not flying blind. the radar is very helpful but
you re trying to figure out what altitude, what route will keep you away from the main rain which is what the radar is seeing but of course you also have turbulence, you can have lightning and hail. all of those things have brought down air liners. one other thing, i would add is if this aircraft did not break up, people speculate that if it broke up in flight there would be a lot of debris and i would not despite that but if they were able to put this aircraft down, there may not be a large debut field presumably, the search aircraft and vessels would be able to locate the intact air craft. but we don t know at this point obviously if it broke up in flight which happened in the air alger thing in july or if it had some kind of mechanical failure like a double engine flame out. remember sullenberger sucked up
