GREEK FRINGE: THRAKI SHOWCASE Explore the music of Thraki or (Thrace) – a region in southeast Europe, now divided between Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey with musicians streaming directly from Greece as well as local musicians playing live. Streaming direct from Greece: “Evritiki Zygia” have a cult following in Greece and have teamed up with renown vocalist – Katerina Douka to bring the traditional sounds of Greece to the world. The live performance will be given by Sydney based group Banda Politika who will be playing folk tunes from the regions of Thrace as well as Macedonia (a tribute to the Great Club’s heritage as the former Alexander the Great Club). On the night you will hear traditional instruments such as the Laouto, Lyra, Gaida (bagpipes), Daouli and more.

Between history and 'mythistory'

Historian, Yianni Cartledge will present a lecture on the Greek War of Independence – He will explore a diverse range of perspectives, ideas and meanings, hoping to build a constructive discussion about the War of Independence, on its 200th anniversary Yianni Cartledge has a passion for Greek, Ottoman, British and Australian histories, as well as migration and diaspora histories, which he explores in his current thesis titled ‘Aegean Islander Migration to the United Kingdom and Australia, 1815-1945’. The struggle for independence and democracy has been tumultuous and bloodied, and arguably at times she has enjoyed surprisingly little of either. This class will be delivered face-to-face at WEA Sydney.
