Break out the Mountain Dew and raise a glass: South Korea’s Yuh-Jung Youn made history Sunday night, winning the supporting actress Academy Award for her role as the mischievous but wise grandmother Soonja in Lee Isaac Chung’s family drama “Minari,” her American film debut.
As soon as she made history she delivered one of the wittiest speeches of the night, greeting presenter Brad Pitt with excitement. “Mr. Brad Pitt, finally. Nice to meet you. Where were you when we were filming in person?”
Youn is the first South Korean performer to be nominated for an Oscar for acting in the 93-year history of the Academy Awards, and is now also the first to win. She is the second actress of Asian descent to win in the supporting category, more than six decades after Miyoshi Umeki won in 1958 for “Sayonara.”
The 93rd Academy Awards red-carpet fashion is on view at Union Station in Los Angeles, where the Oscars 2021 arrivals are happening.
Perhaps in a nod to the hardware being distributed to the evening’s winners, the most-eye-catching metallic looks were head-to-toe gold, notably worn by Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”) in a midriff-bearing organdy copper Valentino Couture gown embroidered with iridescent sequins that was as voluminous on the bottom as it was spare on the top; Andra Day (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”) in a clingy custom Vera Wang Haute gown that flowed around her form like fluid (despite requiring the help of welders to create); and Leslie Odom Jr. (“One Night in Miami .”), who opted for a gold metallic double-breasted Brioni tuxedo and button-front shirt layered over a black turtleneck.

La La Land was wrongly named best picture – an Academy Award remains the ultimate prize in the movie industry.
It’s a validation of excellence that comes with more than 90 years of history, celebrity and glamour – as emotional as winning an Olympic gold medal for everyone from famous directors and actors to unknown visual effects technicians, make-up artists and the creators of animated shorts.
