SEATTLE – New Mexico State got a first-inning, three-run home run from catcher Nikki Butler on Friday night and held on to beat Utah Valley, 4-3, to gain a spot in the Western Athletic Conference softball tournament’s championship round for the 10th consecutive time. The Aggies (31-20) will face second-seeded Seattle on Saturday afternoon. One day after being knocked off by fourth-seeded Utah Valley, the top-seeded Aggies bounced back earlier Friday to beat Grand Canyon 6-2 to advance in the four-team, double-elimination tournament. • New Mexico has had a miserable season but is finishing strong. Behind a three-homer day by Albuquerque’s Andrea Howard, the Lobos (10-35) swept a doubleheader Friday at Utah State (13-30), winning 9-4 and 9-3. The series and season finale is Saturday at noon in Logan, Utah.

Spring sports: Drake sets UNM outdoor high jump mark

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... Senior Jamari Drake cleared 5 feet, 11 1/4 inches Thursday to win the women’s high jump, set a new UNM outdoor record and highlight the home team’s effort at the Don Kirby Tailwind Open. (Click here for women’s results, here for men’s results.) The record Drake, a Southern Miss transfer from Springfield, Illinois, broke lasted a long time Margaret Metcalf went 5-11 in 1979. Drake’s clearance is the fourth best outdoors in the NCAA this season. Many of the Lobos are away this weekend competing at the Drake Relays on Friday and the LSU Alumni Gold meet all weekend. UTEP and New Mexico State brought athletes to the UNM Track and Soccer Complex, but many of the top performances came from two-year schools like Barton Community College and New Mexico JC and Division II schools like Adams State. Some winners, like Emily Schoellkopf (11 minutes, 56.88 seconds) were unaffiliated.
