Unprecedented interactions among the major powers are leading to a significant diplomatic churn in the region
Major West Asian nations have recently embarked on new diplomatic engagements with erstwhile rivals that could in time overturn existing regional alignments and possibly end ongoing conflicts that have wreaked havoc in several states.
The most dramatic interactions have been between senior Saudi and Iranian officials. After their meeting on April 9, the first since diplomatic ties were broken in January 2016, there have been other interactions, with technical committees set up to look at specific topics.

Blackout in Iran threatens to derail nuclear talks
Meetings amid new nuclear talks
The talks took place as Washington and Tehran try to revive a 2015 nuclear accord, which Riyadh has objected to.
The US is also pressing for an end to the ongoing conflict in Yemen, which is seen in the region as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Riyadh has called for a nuclear pact with stronger parameters and has said that Gulf Arab states should join any negotiations on the accord to ensure that it addresses Tehran s missile program and its support for regional proxies.
Former US President Donald Trump quit the nuclear agreement and reimposed sanctions on Iran in 2018 a move that Saudi Arabia and its allies supported.

In response to Saudi Arabia s recent ceasefire proposal, the Houthis in Yemen have, unsurprisingly, only increased attacks against civilian targets. The Houthis are inclined to follow the lead of their Iranian puppeteers, who have a habit of mistaking good will and sincere attempts at reconciliation for weakness.
This, frankly, is a fact the international community seems to have missed. After the Houthis were removed from the terror list in February, the group has mistaken that gesture for a green light to continue its crimes, launching an attack on the civilian airport of Abha within days of the delisting.
