Students in many N.W.T. communities were supposed to start school this week. As wildfire evacuation orders continue, school officials in Yellowknife and South Slave say they don't know when classes will start, or how schools will make up for lost learning.
Head of union representing N.W.T. teachers said online learning wouldn't be feasible because the current situation poses different challenges than did the pandemic.
"I have no belief we will be able to start school on time," Jameel Aziz, the CEO of Yellowknife Education District No. 1, told CBC News on Sunday afternoon.
Dozens of Grade 6 students learned how to transform hides last week at the Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1) first community hide camp. The school yard at Mildred Hall School was filled with the smell of wet fur, sounds of scraping and lots of laughter.
