(Rene Johnston/Toronto Star) To increase competition in Canada’s economy, federal competition laws should be revised, and Ottawa should cut red tape for startups that compete with larger firms, MPs heard on Tuesday. The House of Commons Industry committee kicked off its study of competitiveness in Canada by hearing from experts and representatives of business groups. The broad-ranging study follows recent developments in the Canadian economy, including: the proposed purchase of Shaw by Rogers; the controversial decision by grocery chains to end pandemic pay; and the increased inequity caused by COVID-19 between small and big businesses.
