Fraser bows out after ‘differences’ with CEO Picture: Yanni
HUGH Fraser last week resigned as a Nepean Ward councillor on Mornington Peninsula Shire Council.
His resignation, just four months after being elected for the third successive time, took his fellow councillors, shire officers and constituents by surprise.
Mr Fraser’s position on council will be filled by one of five candidates who unsuccessfully stood for Nepean Ward in last November’s municipal elections.
The winner is likely to be known in about two weeks following a countback of votes by the Victorian Electoral Commission.
The five candidates in the running to fill the vacancy are Susan Bissinger, Mechelle Cheers, Mark Davis, Simon Mulvany and Gary Naughton.

A MOVE to prioritise Indigenous language place names on the Mornington Peninsula was defeated at last week’s council meeting, but the shire is at pains to confirm that this does not mean it will forego its “commitment to reconciliation and to celebrating Aboriginal heritage and culture wherever possible”.
Cr David Gill moved at the 9 February meeting that the shire “make it a priority” to use Indigenous language place names at every opportunity and review opportunities to use dual names “with an aim to have every cultural heritage site recognised with an historic cultural name within two years”.
Pictures put peninsula waters in perspective
Time to reflect: Photographer Matt Burgess calls this picture “Peninsula Perfect” and, even though it’s breaking on the shore, it represents the “green room” that surfers strive to enter on a tubing wave.
PHOTOGRAPHS at the entrance to the new Yawa Aquatic Centre, Rosebud will reflect its connection to the waters surrounding the Mornington Peninsula.
Hastings photographer Matt Burgess was chosen for the job after an expressions of interest process in November. His works will be at the Rosebud pool from March for 12 months.
“Yawa means‘to swim’ in the local Indigenous language and the new aquatic centre draws inspiration from the waterways surrounding the peninsula,” the mayor Cr Despi O’Connor said.
