At least nine people have been killed and 57 were wounded in a Russian air strike on a large Ukrainian military base near the Polish border, local Ukrainian authorities have said, in what appeared to be the westernmost attack of the war.
Despite the ongoing violence, both sides said they thought progress could be made at bilateral talks that have been held periodically since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.
Russia's defense ministry said the air strike had destroyed a large amount of weapons supplied by foreign nations that were being stored at the sprawling training facility, and that it had killed "up to 180 foreign mercenaries."
