Carnegie Wins European Wave Energy Deal

Wave consortium secures research cash

A European consortium has secured more than €3m in funding for a new wave energy research project. IMPACT (Innovative Methods for Wave Energy Pathways Acceleration through Novel Criteria and Test Rigs) is a new collaborative research and innovation project that will develop and demonstrate a next generation testing approach. The three-year €3.3m project aims to accelerate testing device development and reduce the technology cost as part of a global advancement in wave energy converter technologies. The funding is coming from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Partners in the project include VGA, an Italian engineering company, Yavin Four Consultants and the University College Cork MaREI.

A hybrid test platform will reduce product costs for ocean energy

31 January 2021 VALID will provide an accurate correlation between the conditions at sea and in the laboratory by adapting innovative hybrid testing methodologies from the automotive industry. The VALID initiative will develop a hybrid testing platform for accelerated testing, combining both physical and virtual environments. It is aimed at reducing product development process costs for harnessing ocean energy; it tackles the challenges of scaling up and minimises uncertainties. VALID will use and adapt innovative hybrid testing methodologies, which are currently often used in the automotive industry, and apply them to three different case studies specific to the ocean energy sector. This new approach changes the perspective of accelerated testing. Establishing a precise correlation between ocean and laboratory conditions will make it possible to develop common test procedures and promote technological convergence across Europe.
