There are multiple reasons why one cannot speak about âA Christian View of Islam.â Both religions have billions of followers so that terms such as âChristianityâ and âIslamâ should be understood as merely âemaciating abstracts.â
In 2020, there were 2.382 billion, or 31.1 percent of the worldâs population, who identified as Christians. Correspondingly, 1.907 billion Muslims, or 24.9 percent of the worldâs population, adhered to Islam in 2020. This means that well over 50 percent of folks around the world adhered to these two religions.Â
Imagine what would happen if we had a real dialogue today between the major religious leaders of Islam and Christianity. Unfortunately, in the U.S. evangelical leaders like Jerry Falwell Jr. and Franklin Graham see Jesus and Muhammad as representing two different gods. A $30,000 grant from the non-profit organization VentureWell helped launch new class in the College of Human Ecology that gives senior design students the opportunity to develop and market their ideas.
The class – Fiber Science & Apparel Design Futures – is open to seniors in the departments of Fiber Science & Apparel Design and Design + Environmental Analysis. In it, students take a concept they developed in a previous design course and move it closer to the marketplace.
“How would it be made? What would it cost to produce? What would it’s end of life look like? These are the questions students are looking at,” said Margaret Frey, the course’s lead professor and the Vincent V.C. Woo Professor in the department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design. “The students are working in groups with a laundry list of deliverables to choose from. We’re asking them to think about the skills they want to be able to demonstrate to a prospective employer.”
